Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

Having worked abroad helps provide valuable work experience which can help you in immigrating to Canada.

The Federal Skilled Worker Class (previously known as The Federal Skilled Worker Program) is an immigration program designed to aid skilled workers who have at least one year of work experience to obtain Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. It is a part of the Express Entry System.

What is the Process?
  • Applicants must meet minimum work experience requirements

  • They must have taken the designated language test in English and or French and achieved the threshold language proficiency score

  • Applicants must express their interest to permanently immigrate to Canada

  • They must create an online Express Entry Profile

  • They must receive an Invitation to Apply through FSW Program from the Canadian Government before they can apply for PR.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

General requirements:

  • Have at least one year of paid continuous (full-time or equivalent part-time) work experience, within last 10 years, in occupations listed in skill type level 0, A or B of the NOC matrix

  • Meet the minimum language requirements: CLB 7

  • Plan to live in any province except Quebec

  • Have Canadian secondary (high school) or post secondary certificate, diploma or degree (remember that more CRS points are given for higher qualifications) OR foreign education equivalent to Canadian (ECA verified)

  • Have proof of funds unless has qualifying job offer

  • If above minimum requirements are met, then FSW points assessment must meet 67 out of 100 points

  • Must meet ALL of the above requirements of FSW (not just the 67 points)

NOTE:

  • If work experience in Canada, must have been authorized (it does not include work without visa or while on a refugee claim)

  • Someone exceeding the minimum cut-off score for CRS points does not mean the person meets the minimum requirements of FSW!!!

  • Meeting the requirements of the FSW does not mean the person will have 67 points

The FSW Point System:

  • Gives higher priority to younger workers

  • Places emphasis on fluency in official languages, with the requirement to attain a minimum official language proficiency

  • Awards extra points for Canadian work experience

  • Awards extra points to an applicant whose spouse has fluency in official languages and/or Canadian work experience
