Changes to Open Work Permit (OWP) Eligibility

Effective January 21, 2025, the Government of Canada has introduced changes to open work permit (OWP) eligibility for family members of temporary residents. Here’s what you need to know:


Key Highlights of the Update


  • Spousal OWP Eligibility:

    • Spouses of foreign workers employed in TEER 0 or 1 occupations remain eligible.

    • Spouses of workers in select TEER 2 or 3 occupations within prioritized sectors.


  • Prioritized Sectors:

    • Natural and applied sciences

    • Construction

    • Health care

    • Natural resources

    • Education

    • Sports and military


TEER 2 and 3 Occupations for OWP may include:


  • Health Care: Medical laboratory technologists, respiratory therapists etc.

  • Construction: Supervisors in trades such as plumbing and electrical etc.

  • Education: Early childhood educators and assistants etc.

  • Sports and Military: Coaches, trainers, and certain non-commissioned ranks etc.


The full list of Eligible TEER 2 and 3 Occupations will be available on January 21, 2025.
